Juveniles are rather opaque with striations on their arms. With a gray-green spotted head and back, females are more opaque, sometimes having some black on the neck and shoulders. The wings are black in adult males, with a white wing bar and a yellow spot on the shoulder. The males have black backs, black breasts, blackheads, and yellow bellies. This black and yellow oriole favor areas where, often on steep slopes, yuccas are plentiful. Typically they feed on the top of the leaves, or in-flight they catch insects. They migrate south in winter, and this season they are spread in lowlands from the southern part of the Baja California Peninsula and central-western Mexico to Costa Rica, hitting a high population. Around four blue-green eggs with brown spots are laid by the female. On a horizontal branch of a tree, normally a conifer, they build a loose nest. Its strong sexual dimorphism characterizes them. The males in the spring are bright yellow and glossy black with a little white. Usually, goldfinches flock with Pine Siskins and Common Redpolls. This beautiful little finch, the New Jersey, Washington, and Iowa state bird, is welcome and common among feeders.
